Portia Jelinek
| Throughout her lifetime Portia has owned many dogs and loved everything about them. Over the past ten years, she’s become involved competitively with Australian Shepherds, participating in obedience, rally, agility, conformation, and some herding. Through Truckee Meadows Dog Training Club, she has taught classes in obedience and rally for the past several years, and taken advanced training at the Jack and Wendy Volhard: TopDog Training Camp in Virgina. Portia has been involved in almost all the venues involved in Rally and Obedience, including ASCA (Australian Shepherd Club of America), AKC (American Kennel Club), UKC (United Kennel Club), and APDT (Association of Pet Dog Trainers).
Throughout the years of showing her dogs, she has achieved numerous titles and awards. In traditional obedience, her and her dogs have earned CD’s (Companion Dog titles) and CDX (Companion Dog Excellent) from several venues, and in Rally, two of her dogs have earned the title of AKC RE (Rally Excellent). In 2005, her dog Kukoc was awarded “Obedience Dog of the Year,” by the Truckee Meadows Dog Training Club. At that time, she started training her dogs for agility. Their foundation in obedience helped in many ways in agility. They’ve earned titles in: ASCA, AKC, NADAC (North American Dog Agility Council), and CPE (Canine Performance Events). In 2009, ASCA ranked two of her dogs nationally in the Top Ten of the Merit List: 4th and 5th in Regular Open Agility, 8th in Jumpers Open Agility, and 8th in Gamblers Open Agility. Her Aussies were the only Nevada dogs on the Merit List, and she believes this could not have happened without the in-depth work she had done in obedience. “I’m very excited to be starting these classes at Carson Dog Sports,” says Portia. “You will find it so rewarding to come to class and interact with your dog on a positive level. I will teach YOU, how to train your dog so that the experience will last far longer than just our training sessions. The rally exercises are easy to practice at home, and understanding and advancement should come quickly to you and your dog. As an active member of the Northern Nevada Australian Shepherd Club (NNASC), I would be happy to help you ready your dog for competition, as NNASC has obedience and rally trials open to all breeds, with very inexpensive entry fees.” These classes will be FUN – so, let’s start the adventure. |
