Obedience Level III

Obedience Level III– Designed for handlers and dogs who have successfully completed Level II and are interested in obtaining Obedience titles in AKC, UKC, or ASCA.  Each of these Levels building on the previous Level, if you have not taken the previous Level, there are some skills that will be more difficult to master.  Since the handlers now have control, the emphasis is on motivation and accuracy.  Making sure the dog understands the commands.   The dog to remain in Heel position off- leash executing all exercises including the About Turn, Right Turn, Left Turn, Fast and Slow pace; Sit, Stand, and Down Stays and the Recall. New exercises include going to Heel from anywhere, stationary attention, improving handler footwork, jumping and retrieving.

The handler/dog team is judged on their execution of these Novice exercises:

Heeling (on and off lead) 

  • Changes of pace from normal to fast
  • Changes of pace from normal to slow
  • About turns
  • Left turns
  • Right turns
  • Pivots
  • Halts
  • Figure-Eight

Stand for Exam

  • Standing the dog
  • Leaving the dog with a Stay command
  • Dog allowing the Judge to approach and touch them
  • Handler returning to heel position
Recall 

  • Leaving the dog on a Sit/Stay
  • Calling the dog  to come front
  • Dog returning to heel position (Left or Right)

Long Stays

  • Stand/Stay
  • Group Exercise (up to 12 dogs)
  • Handlers are on the opposite side of the ring, facing their dogs
  • Sit/Stay  – for  1 minute
  • Down/Stay – for 3 minutes

Start of Open Obedience

  • Jumping (broad and high jump)
  • Retrieving any item
  • Motivational Retrieve (Dumbbell)
  • Moving Down
  • Backing
